Krill Oil is the oil that extracted from a species of krill or Euphausia superb. Krill is a shrimp-like marine crustacean that can be found in all oceans of the world. In fact, many scientists consider krill to have the largest biomass in the world. Meaning, it’s so abundant. Krill is essential to the survival of almost every species of animal that lives in the Antarctic or sub-Antarctic and island groups. The importance of krill in marine ecology lead to the formation of a treaty organization called the Commission for the Conservatory of Antarctic Marine Living creatures or CCAMLR (pronounced ‘camel-lahr’) to help protect and balance krill harvesting from the ecosystem. The U.S., U.K., Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Chile, European Community, Germany and Japan are all members of the said organization.

The oil extracted from krill, just like almost all marine creatures, has been found to contain Omega-3 fatty acids. Krill is becoming so popular due the positive health effects of Omega-3 in humans. Omega-3 has been found to help prevent the risk of getting cancer. It is also being marketed to help lower high cholesterol, being ‘good for the heart’ because it reduces the risk of heart diseases, lower high blood pressure, prevent stroke and, very important to women, lower the risk of having painful menstrual cramps or dysmenorrheal.

Another reason why Krill Oil is becoming popular is because it contains an antioxidant called astaxanthin. Astaxanthin pigment is the result of krill eating algae which also gives other crustaceans like shrimp and lobster their reddish-pink color. Antioxidants, just like the name implies, prevents oxidation to occur in the skin. Oxidation reactions produce free radicals that damage the skin and are believed by some to have some contributions to some chronic diseases. Many beauty supplements market on antioxidants by promoting its good effects in maintaining beautiful and smooth skin and being free from free radicals. What separates astaxanthin from other antioxidants is that it can ride in the blood that enters the brain to help protect the central nervous system including the eye and the brain from damage from free radicals.

Other notably effects of Krill Oil in the body, especially to the elders, are as arthritis remedies like prevention of inflamed joints in, helps keep a sharp memory, fast recovery from depression, lower risk of psychotic depression and Parkinson’s Disease and many more.
